Future Nokia handsets to be waterproof

At the same time as unveiling their latest budget offering – the Lumia 610 – Nokia also revealed that they’ve been secretly working on ‘superhydrophobic’ technology (that’s a mouthful, isn’t it?).

Conor Pierce, VP of Nokia Western Europe, began explaining the technology in slightly cryptic terms, saying, ’What happens when a drop of water lands on a lotus leaf… has baffled scientists for generations… but our team in Cambridge UK found a solution.’

‘Nano technology lets us do it. Superhydrophobic technology makes water bounce, it stops it, rolls it off the device and leaves it water impregnant, that’s the magic, that’s what we’re going to bring to the party.’

Nokia’s intention with this technology is to implement into all future PureView and Lumia devices. Waterproof phones have been called for since time immemorial, but it’s only recently that handsets such as the Motorola Defy Plus have effectively managed to combine quality with solidity in a phone.
