New ASUS MWC Teaser References Tablet’s Voice Call Abilities

A couple days back we saw the first MWC teaser video from ASUS, touting the company’s “metallic miracle” that would be coming soon. Based on the picture we recently saw of a metal-bodied ASUS Fonepad, that seemed to be what the video was referencing. Now ASUS has a new MWC teaser out, and it once again looks to be Fonepad-focused.
Just like the last one, it’s set in Barcelona, this time featuring a statue of Christopher Columbus. The statue’s tablet suddenly starts ringing, and we see it come to life and appear to take a phone call.
While the company’s previous Padfone mated a separate smartphone and tablet dock, the Fonepad will presumably be a 180 on that idea – that is, a device that’s essentially a tablet, but one you can also use to make phone calls. We’ve seen this kind of functionality toyed with through software on devices like the Nexus 7, but this time a manufacturer appears to be embracing the idea that seven-inch tablets, while definitely larger than the phones we’re used to, can still be used to make calls in a pinch.
From all we’ve seen, it’s almost certain that we’ll hear ASUS formally announce the Intel-powered Fonepad in the next few days.
