Sony Xperia Z as Underwater Camera
Sony says the Xperia Z is rated IP55 and IP57 for water and dust resistance, that means the device can be submerged in water of up to a metre deep for up to 30 minutes. So we decided to test the Xperia Z to the limit and the video you see here is the result.
We used the Xperia Z as an underwater camera and at times, left it submerged in 1.5 metre deep water for 5 - 10 minutes. We flung the phone in the air 15-20 feet high and left it to plummet into the swimming pool unhindered.
We used the Xperia Z way beyond the scope that Sony designers had imagined and through it all, the Z didn't even break a sweat while looking ultra sexy doing it.
Can you use the Xperia Z as an underwater camera? Sure. It's perfect for the pool. The camera quality is pretty good too, and the mic picked up clear underwater sounds as well. You can technically churn out some pretty good underwater footage from this device but we wouldn't take it beyond the casual dip in the pool. It is after all a smartphone. But what a fun smartphone it is.
BTW, if you're wondering, the touchscreen doesn't detect screen taps when the device is submerged, you'll have to press record before you take it for a dive.
