Order your sandwich by app, with Subway on your Nokia Lumia

For many, deciding what to have for lunch can depend on how easy it is to go out and buy it. Thankfully, the Subway app makes our lunch orders much easier as you can now order your sandwich right from your Nokia Lumia Windows Phone 8 smartphone.

For frequent visitors to Subway restaurants, you’ll be familiar with the production line-like ordering process. You start at one end of the counter and work your way along pointing at the types of filling you want until you emerge at the other side where you swap money for your freshly prepared ‘Sub’.

It’s a good system, but why not skip it?

When you order your lunch using the Subway app, you’re bypassing the standing about and totally removing the sidestepping.

At first, the app will welcome you with a basic selection screen, and it’s here where you can either login to an existing SUBCARD® account, or create a new one if you wish. However, you don’t need to do this, this is Subway’s loyalty scheme where you can earn points for making purchases with the aim of receiving free food further down the line.

The next tile is where you can decide where you want to purchase your lunch. Within that section, you’re able to browse through all the stores – ideal if you’re planning to be somewhere else later – or find your nearest store which taps into your phones GPS.

Whatever time you’re planning to have your lunch, or breakfast, or snack, you can select a specific pickup time from the aptly named ‘Pickup time’ tile.

Now, it’s time to order your food. Go ahead and tap on the ‘New tile’ to browse the menu.

The menu is really clear to understand and is split into categories. If you like your meal deals, select from the £2 Breakfast Deal, £3 Lunch Deal, or £5 Footlong Deal tiles. If you prefer to go à la carte, browse through the Subs, Breakfast, Salads, Wraps, or Kids Pak sections.

Continue through the process, selecting what types of bread, cheese, sauces etc. that you want, eventually finishing on the ‘Success!’ page. All you need to do is wait for the pickup time and go out and collect it.

When trying this out, I was a bit apprehensive about strolling in and cutting in front of people in the queue (very British of me), so I joined the back of the queue. However, when I reached the first person in the sandwich-making process, I was asked to go right to the front and collect my order.

If you’re a SUBCARD® member, now’s the perfect opportunity to present the on-screen QR code to the member of staff. They’ll scan it and add the points to your account.

In case anybody needed proof that this app works, here’s a photo of my lunch, ordered completely through the Subway app on my Nokia Lumia 620.

Currently, the Subway app only gives you access to Greater London stores – that’s about 184 stores (I counted).
