SAMSUNG Leads Industry in Environmental Performance as First Manufacturer on All Three Categories of EPEAT Registry
Samsung has the widest variety and highest number of EPEAT products in the world
Samsung announced its achievement of being the first manufacturer to have products listed in all three categories of the EPEAT registry, the definitive global index for electronics that governments, institutions, and consumers use to identify environmentally preferable products such as printers, laptops, and televisions.
EPEAT today announced the addition of a television category to its registry. With 71 TVs, 58 printers, and hundreds of models in the PC/display category, Samsung has more EPEAT-registered products than any other manufacturer.
“It has become increasingly important for manufacturers to consider responsible design and environmental impact when developing products,” said David Steel, executive vice president of strategy at Samsung Electronics North America. “We are pleased that EPEAT is providing this important service to help purchasers make smart decisions.”
To be added to the EPEAT registry, products must meet a number of environmental performance criteria developed by hundreds of representatives from the environmental, manufacturing, research, recycling, and government sectors. EPEAT’s rating system is used as an environmental requirement by eight national governments, including the United States, and thousands of purchasers worldwide.
“Samsung has shown the breadth of their environmental commitment by registering products in each category of the EPEAT registry,” said Robert Frisbee, EPEAT CEO. “I commend Samsung for being the first manufacturer to achieve this milestone, and I applaud their pioneering role in EPEAT’s television category.”
Since 2006, EPEAT-registered electronics have helped people eliminate greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 11 million U.S. vehicles’ annual impact, avoided more than 394,000 metric tons of hazardous waste, and reduced solid waste by nearly 167,000 metric tons – equivalent to nearly 86,000 U.S. households’ annual waste.
EPEAT is among many organizations Samsung works with to develop energy-efficient and eco-conscious products while helping to educate consumers about the importance of reducing greenhouse gases. Samsung recently received the highest recognition from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR program with the 2013 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence Award, was ranked among the top 25 on Interbrand’s 2012 Best Global Green Brand list, won four of the 10 awards in the CES 2013 Eco-Design and Sustainable Technologies category, and received eight SEAD Global Efficiency Medals.
