AT&T finally pushing out Windows Phone 7.8 8862 update for Nokia Lumia 900 (Update)

Can you believe that it's been only three months since Microsoft began it initial roll out for Windows Phone 7.8? For some of you unwilling to tinker with unsanctioned tools or unlucky with the arbitrary tricks, 'only three months' must have felt like an eternity. Today we're happy to deliver some good news for patient Lumia 900 owners on AT&T: the official Windows Phone 7.8 8862 update is rolling out through Zune right now.

Announced by Nokia Care US's Twitter account this morning, a new support page on Nokia's website has gone live detailing the long-awaited official carrier update for the last-gen Nokia flagship on AT&T. (So far we haven't heard anything about AT&T's other Windows Phones.)

Once you being the process through Zune, the phone will go through a total of four updates. If you haven't gotten it until now, the Windows Phone 7.8 OS update adds the new Start screen, some redesigned live tiles, and many more accent colors. After every update is all downloaded and done, you should see the following OS and firmware builds listed under your phone's Settings > About page:

  • OS version: 7.10.8862.144
  • Firmware revision number: 2175.2307.8862.13100

If you manually forced the Windows Phone 7.8 update on to your device, you are likely still on an older firmware (our forced Lumia 900 is showing 2175.2307.8858.12480) so there is probably at least one new update waiting for you in Zune right now too.

For those who have waited this long to jump aboard the Windows Phone 7.8 train, you may want to watch our hands-on impression video above. Overall while the update is worth downloading for the incredible utility of the new Start screen, some may be disappointed to find there's not much else actually new to the OS.

Update: After a bit of back and forth with WPCentral's Daniel Rubino in regards to whether or not AT&T was actively pushing out the 7.8 update back in January, we've updated the article to reflect that today's rollout is specifically for the 8862 update plus a new firmware update from Nokia. If you haven't gotten 7.8 until now, it was because the update was halted due to a live tile bug, which 8862 has since fixed. Sorry about the confusion.
