Gartner: almost 75% of all smartphones run on Android

Gartner has published the results of the first quarter of 2013 for the mobile phone market. In comparison with 2012 in all regions was recorded a slight increase of 0.7%. A significant increase in the number of buyers was seen only in the Asia-Pacific region, where it was 6.4%. In just three months were sold 426 million units, of which 226 million was invested in Asia. At the same time it should be noted that despite the overall decline, the smartphone segment continues to grow rapidly. For the first quarter was 210 million smartphones sold, up 42.9% from a year earlier. Speaking about the manufacturers of mobile devices, the three leaders did not change, which is not surprising in view of the detachments that existed in 2012. In the first place there is the Korean company Samsung, whose sales grew by 13% overall. At the moment it takes a 23.6% market share and 30.8% of the smartphone market. In second place is saved by Nokia, whose sales continue to decline. During the first quarter of 2013 the drop was 4.9%. The most unfortunate for the manufacturer is the fact that despite the fact that sales of Windows Phone smartphones reached 5.1 million units in the quarter, in this growing market segment of its position weakened. If the 4th quarter of 2012, it ranked 8th place, it is now only 10th. On the third line is Apple, which sold 38.3 million smartphones and came close to the limit of the possible saturation of the market with their products. Among the manufacturers of the second tier is worth noting LG, which came in fourth place, edging out ZTE, which has failed to boost sales of smartphones, reducing them by 5.1%, to 7.9 million units. On the mobile operating system market changes also occurred. Android surely retains the top spot, taking in sales of 74.4%. iOS continues to hold second place, but its share fell from 22.5% in the first quarter of 2012 to 18.2% in the current year. The others present in the OS market can not compete with any of the leaders. The share of RIM fell from 6.8% to 3%, while Windows has grown, but only slightly: from 1.9% to 2,9%, Bada and Symbian occupy less than 1% each. Probably a redistribution of shares will happen after the market will come Tizen, Firefox and Jolla, but they are unlikely to shake the dominant position of Android.
