HTC Butterfly S goes official with Snapdragon 600 CPU and beefy 3,200 mAh battery

Following a long string of leaks and rumors, the HTC Butterfly S has gone official moments ago in Taiwan, as expected. And while big chunks of the thing’s spec sheet were revealed a while ago, HTC still kept an ace or two up its sleeve.

First surprise, the battery. You might remember the first-gen Butterfly, which looked flawless in many ways, disappointed in this department, only packing a 2,020 mAh ticker. The One improved the battery capacity a little (2,300 mAh) while shrinking down the 5-inch display to 4.7, but the Full HD screen/Snapdragon 600 SoC combo still ate up that “juice” in no time.

With that in mind, you should rejoice when hearing the Butterfly S packs a massive 3,200 mAh battery. That’s still likely non-removable, but who cares at this point?

Second surprise, the chip inside the Butterfly S. No, unfortunately it’s still not a Snapdragon 800, but it’s surely the next best thing – a quad-core Snapdragon 600 clocked at 1.9 GHz. That’s exactly what the Galaxy S4 uses, while the HTC One comes with a lower-clocked 1.7 GHz 600 SoC in tow.

The rest of the specs were more or less easy to guess beforehand, but that doesn’t make them any less cool. After all, is there a phone around with a better display than a 5-inch Full HD one? Or with more than 2 gigs of RAM?

True, the 16 GB of on-board storage sounds a little meager, but, unlike the One, the Butterfly S supports microSD memory expansion. On the software side of things, there’s on-board Jelly Bean, but we have no idea if it’s 4.1 or 4.2 (my money is on the latter). There’s also Sense 5, while in terms of connectivity you get quad-band HSPA/WCDMA, plus all the usual – Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, DLNA, NFC, GPS.

The cameras are identical to those sported by the One – Ultrapixel snapper on the back and 2.1 MP front cam – but naturally the design is a little different. Different bad mostly, since the Butterfly S follows on its predecessor’s footsteps and uses plastic instead of metal for its chassis.

Also, the thing is a little chunky, weighing in at 160 grams and measuring 10.6 mm in thickness, but that’s what you get when you dramatically increase the battery size.

It’s unclear if the HTC Butterfly S will ever make it to the West, while in Asia it only has an ETA and official price tag in Taiwan – July, NT $22,900 (US $766).
