"Think Big, Start Small"—Huawei Launches the SoftCOM BIZ Program to Meet the Commercial Demands that will Drive Technology Forward

Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, launched its SoftCOM Business Initiatives Zoom-in (BIZ) Program at the SDN World 2013. The program looks at ICT network architecture to explore the potential application scenarios for the SoftCOM in carrier networks so that telecom operators can realize its commercial value.

In February 2013, Huawei launched its SoftCOM strategy of future network in London and illustrated the core concept and comprehensive business value of SoftCOM at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2013. Based upon the principles of cloud computing, software-defined network (SDN), network function virtualization (NFV), and network openness, SoftCOM creates new opportunities to boost revenues and reduce costs in the ICT industry to achieve the goal of business growth and sustainability in an increasingly complex and competitive market space. The Huawei SoftCOM evolution is underpinned by four core elements which aim to promote carrier network evolution in the ICT era. These core pillars are: network control cloud-formation, network function cloud-formation, IT infrastructure cloud-formation, and Internetized operations.

Huawei believes that the future of technological development in the ICT industry is driven by business needs. Based on the SoftCOM framework and a "think big, start small" philosophy, Huawei aims to realize the SoftCOM for telecom operators with a step-by-step approach by studying and analyzing each part of the network to develop cost-effective solutions that can be efficiently applied to the operators’ existing networks. Huawei kick-starts the SoftCOM BIZ program with seven application scenarios and solutions to these:

SDN-based mobile backhaul: Realizes automatic configuration and upgrade of the cell site gateway (CSG) by integrating its control plane to the aggregation site gateway (ASG), which greatly improves the efficiency of mobile backhaul in terms of network management and deployment and new service provisioning.
SDN-based traffic steering for Gi-LAN: Schedules different types of service traffic to be transmitted on different lines, which saves expansion cost of Gi-LAN control components by about 60%.
SDN-based data center interconnection (DCI): Significantly improves the overall utilization of network bandwidth and data center resources based on a holistic view of the network and smart traffic navigation.
Cloud IMS/EPC: The operating system (Huawei FusionSphere Cloud OS for example) dynamically schedules and allocates resources for each network element, thereby greatly improving resource utilization and the scalability and agility of the network.
Virtualized STB: Virtualizes most functions of set top box (STB) on the network side by establishing a virtual STB server, thus reducing the complexity of STBs on the users' side, supporting plug-and-play and one-stop upgrade of STBs, and reducing time-to-market of new services.
Business Enablement Suite (BES): In addition to the business support system, BES also acts as an "efficient enablement" system to help operators realize Internetized operation, providing on-demand experience for users, and orchestrated & automatic business processes and opened capabilities for operators.
Communication as a service (CaaS): CaaS interconnects everything quickly and easily to help carriers rapidly expand their vertical markets.
These solutions for different application scenarios allow carriers to fundamentally improve network utilization and operating efficiency, achieve structural cost reduction, and seize new commercial opportunities through industry integration. The Huawei SoftCOM BIZ program will continue to explore more scenario applications based on the needs of customers.

"Surveying the ICT industry landscape from both business and technological perspectives, Huawei has tailored SoftCOM solutions to be applied to different scenarios so as to create new business opportunities and drive technological changes", says Mr. Wang Shengqing, President of Global Marketing and Solution Sales of Huawei Carrier Network Business Group. "Huawei’s SoftCOM BIZ program is a solid step to realize our SoftCOM strategy for the evolution of future networks. The program will continue to help telecom operators tackle commercial challenges and find new growth models for the construction of an innovative and open ecosystem."
