Huawei and Yota Jointly Announce Successful Trial of Efficient Mobile Data Traffic Solution

Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, along with leading Russian LTE mobile operator Yota jointly announced a successful trial of an end-to-end (E2E) quality of service (QoS) solution for efficiently prioritizing the flow of mobile network data traffic.

The successful test of the solution, FPI (Flow Priority Indicator), was announced at the recent 2013 Global MBB Forum in London to numerous major global mobile broadband (MBB) decision makers and MBB ecosystem stakeholders.

FPI is built to prioritize the flow of traffic with differentiated QoS scheduling for different mobile services on the RAN (radio access network) side. This allows the policy and charging rules function (PCRF) and evolved packet core gateway (EPC GW) on the core network side to be more efficient in handling increases in traffic from an increasingly diverse range of mobile services.

A brief overview of FPI’s technical architecture

The benefit is differentiation of QoS for a wide variety of mobile service applications common on smart phones, like social networking, online gaming, mobile video, web browsing and real-time video conferencing – all which can contribute to increased network traffic congestion, and degraded QoS for other important mobile services like VoIP calls, mobile office suites, emergency services and more.

Konstantin Yurganov, Yota CTO, presented the findings of the successful FPI technical trial at the Forum in London in early November this year. The results showed that delivered web and video bandwidth over their mobile network had significantly improved, with web bandwidth doubling and bandwidth abuse being effectively suppressed.

UPCON (User Plane Congestion), a 3GPP cell congestion management project, is widely expected to include technical specifications found in Huawei’s FPI solution when the standards body announces its results for new global wireless standards for alleviating mobile network user plane congestion.
