Samsung unlikely to adopt metal-alloy chassis for Galaxy S5

Rumors have surfaced that Samsung Electronics will adopt a metal-alloy chassis for the Galaxy S5, its new flagship smartphone to be unveiled in late February 2014, with Catcher Technology, Ju Teng International and BYD identified as chassis suppliers. However, Taiwan-based chassis makers have commented that the rumors are unlikely because no makers have started mass production of metal-alloy chassis for Samsung.

The sources pointed out that Samsung is currently still evaluating the adoption of metal chassis.

In addition, the sources also believe that replacing plastic chassis with metal-alloy models is unnecessary for Samsung since the company has managed to become the largest smartphone vendor in the world while selling mainly plastic-based models. Switching to metal-alloy-based chassis would also significantly increase production costs, the sources added.

In the future, Samsung is likely to adopt chassis featuring compound materials such as fiberglass/plastic or carbon fiber/plastic for its smartphones instead of a single materials to help save costs.
