China holds 8 spots among top-12 smartphone vendors, says IC Insights

Eight of the world's top-12 smartphone companies during the first quarter of 2016 are China-based including Huawei, Oppo, Xiaomi, Vivo, ZTE, Lenovo, TCL and Meizu, according to IC Insights.

Meanwhile, India-based Micromax joined IC Insights' list of the world's top-12 smartphone suppliers for the first time.

Samsung Electronics, with unit sales of 81.5 million units, was the largest smartphone vendor in the first quarter of 2016, followed by Apple with 51.6 million units, IC Insights said. China-based Huawei, Oppo, Xiaomi ranked third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

IC Insights believes that there will be very little middle ground with regard to smartphone shipment growth rates among the top-12 suppliers in 2016. Seven of the top-12 companies are forecast to register growth of 6% or less while the other five companies are expected to each log 29% or better increases.
