DEPLOY THE GEAR S3 INTO YOUR ENTERPRISE

Samsung today announced the launch of the Samsung Gear S3 smartwatch, the most powerful and versatile device in our line of Galaxy wearables.

The Gear S3 will be available in two distinct styles – the Frontier, a daily active watch for explorers, and the Classic, a minimal watch for young professionals.

Both models run on the Tizen 2.3.2 operating system and are secured by Samsung Knox, Samsung’s industry leading mobile security platform. The Gear S3 also supports Samsung’s mobile pay service, Samsung Pay.

The Gear S3 is a B2B-ready device, and is designed for quick adoption by a variety of enterprises. These include industries with a high incidence of mission-critical tasks, such as mining, transportation, healthcare, construction, and leisure and hospitality.

The Gear S3 can connect with many phones running the Android operating system, but will also have some core functionality without pairing with a mobile device. In the new Standalone mode, the smartwatch can call, message and check contacts.

In Standalone mode, an MDM solution can apply device management policies directly to the Gear S3, without a paired device. This enables MDMs to support a wide range of device manageability features for the smartwatch.

The Gear S3 will be compatible with the Knox Mobile Enrollment Program, enabling IT admins and MDM solution providers to stage and enroll large numbers of devices automatically by configuring device information in the cloud. There’s no need for staging services, and no need for IT to physically access each device during setup.

To meet the needs of a variety of enterprise customer demands, Samsung is releasing the Knox Tizen Wearable SDK. The beta for this SDK is available on the Samsung Enterprise Alliance Program (SEAP) site, and the official release will be available on Oct. 7, to coincide with the global launch of the Gear S3.

This SDK consists of a package designed to provide easy access and use for third-party developers, providing them with mobile device management, configuration, and security capabilities to help customize the device and meet the requirements of most enterprises.

The SDK consists of three sets of APIs:

Knox Wearable MDM APIs
Customization APIs
Attestation API

The SDK key features include:

App management, Wipe data, Lock device, Roaming control
Attestation
ProKiosk mode, Settings control

Apps integrated with the Knox Tizen Wearable SDK will be able to communicate directly with their server. Tizen’s built-in security protocol doesn’t allow for sideloading (installing an APK directly onto the device), and only apps signed by the Tizen app store can be installed on the Gear S3 through the Gear app store.

To overcome this policy, Samsung provides App Installation For Enterprise. With this service, Samsung provides app signing through the Gear app store, and delivers the singed app with a deep link. To provision the signed app, a solution vendor can send the deep link via SMS.
