Sprint Nextel and UQ Communications to hold talks with Taiwan officials and WiMAX makers

A number of top executives of WiMAX operators around the globe, including Sprint Nextel of the US and UQ Communications of Japan, will hold talks with their counterparts as well as WiMAX CPE (customer premise equipment) makers in Taiwan on December 17 for possible business cooperation, according to government officials and industry sources.

Taiwan-based network-equipment makers, including Gemtek Technology, D-Link, Zyxel Communications, Tecom and Accton Technology, have been invited to attend the cooperation meeting, said industry sources.

In addition, the visiting executives will also attend a summit calling for international cooperation in the global WiMAX industry sponsored by Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), said government officials.

During the upcoming event, the MOEA will also urge both Sprint Nextel and UQ to set up IOT (interoperability testing) centers for WiMAX products in Taiwan in order to facilitate the purchase of WiMAX equipment from Taiwan-based companies by the two WiMAX operators, according to a Chinese-language Commercial Times report.

Sprint Nextel is currently in talks with Taiwan-based M-Skylink, a WiMAX test and certification service company, for the joint establishment of a WiMAX IOT in Taiwan, the paper noted.
