AT&T Government Solutions Announces $50 Million Wireless Solution Award from FEMA
Department of Homeland Security Agency Award Requires AT&T to Deploy Smartphone and Mobile Computing Devices for FEMA Workforce
The AT&T Government Solutions business unit has announced three awards potentially worth up to $50 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), an agency within the Department of Homeland Security, to provide voice and data devices for the nationwide FEMA workforce. FEMA is responsible for coordinating the federal government's role in disaster preparedness, response and recovery.
AT&T Government Solutions will serve as the primary wireless provider to FEMA and deliver secure, reliable wireless data and voice communications for the FEMA workforce. FEMA's workforce will be able to leverage AT&T Mobility's wireless network to run a wide assortment of e-mail, voice and data applications in the field via mobile devices, smartphones and wireless laptop cards. FEMA can procure additional wireless applications from AT&T Government Solutions based on the needs of the agency.
"A secure wireless communications infrastructure is critical for first responders and their emergency management operations," said Don Herring, senior vice president, AT&T Government Solutions. "With the proven reliability, bandwidth and speed of our network, AT&T Government Solutions can help FEMA employees access the information they need for real-time decision making in the field while ensuring they can collect, access and transmit this information in a secure environment at all times, regardless of location."
FEMA will receive a combination of AT&T's LaptopConnect wireless cards and BlackBerry® 8820 smartphones, as well as the 3G LG CU405 unit, which provides FEMA employees with Push To Talk capability and is a key feature for first responders.
LaptopConnect and the BlackBerry 8820 smartphone will also provide FEMA employees with wireless connectivity for their laptop computers and BlackBerry smartphones to the AT&T Wi-FiSM network, the nation's largest Wi-Fi network with more than 17,000 AT&T Hot Spots. The BlackBerry 8820 is powered by AT&T's nationwide** EDGE network, with availability in more than 13,000 cities and towns and along some 40,000 miles of major highways.
The BlackBerry 8820 Series device features a full and highly tactile QWERTY keyboard, the thin BlackBerry design, user-friendly trackball navigation system, voice and data functionality, built-in GPS and an expandable memory slot. The BlackBerry 8820 is dual-mode, combining EDGE/GPRS/GSM cellular and Wi-Fi connectivity for flexible data access.
AT&T Government Solutions already provides a wide array of voice and data services to the Department of Homeland Security and several of its agencies, including U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Transportation Security Administration and several others.
The FEMA contracts each have a one-year base with four one-year options.
