Dopod eyes 50% handset shipment growth in China in 2009
Smartphone vendor Dopod, which has strong connections with High Tech Computer (HTC), expects its handset shipments in China to continue expanding by 50% in 2009, according to company CEO Dennis Chen.
Chen made the prediction while attending a ceremony to mark the launch of the HTC Touch Pro and Touch HD handsets in China recently.
In 2008, Dopod saw its handset shipments in China grow by 50% to 1.2 million units from 800,000 units recorded in 2007.
In addition to the HTC Touch Pro and HD, Dopod plans to launch 10 more handsets in China this year, the company said.
The company may also expand its lineup by introducing a customized Android-powered handset for a China-based telecom service provider in the first quarter, according to market sources.
Dopod is also likely to see an influx of orders for its handsets supporting WCDMA, CDMA 2000 and TD-SCDMA standards at the end of 2009 due to a take-off of commercialized 3G services in China, said the sources.
