Compal Communications handset shipments fall short of target in 2008
Compal Communications shipped a total of 37.8 million handsets in 2008, falling short of its revised shipment target of 48 million units and also behind the 47.8 million units it shipped in 2007, according to company sources.
Although handset shipments in the fourth quarter of 2008 were down to 8.2 million units from 9.5 million units in the third quarter, fourth-quarter revenues of NT$10.1 billion (US$304.2 million) represented a sequential growth of 20.3% due to increasing shipments of smartphones.
Thanks to smartphone shipments to Motorola, ASPs improved to NT$1,235 in the fourth quarter compared to NT$886 in the previous quarter, the sources noted.
In December, revenues totaled NT$1.4 billion, down 68.9% sequentially and also down 52% on year. For all of 2008, revenues reached NT$36.18 billion, a decline of 25.8% from a year earlier.
