Arima Communications setting up handset plant in Brazil

Taiwan-based handset maker Arima Communications is setting up a handset-manufacturing plant in Jundiai in the Brazilian state of San Paulo, with commercial production slated for April 2009 at an initial capacity of 100,000 units per month, according to market sources.

To minimize its capital spending, Arima will set up the production lines at a rental plant, accommodating production facilities and equipment that will be transferred from Arima's plant in Yingko, Taiwan, the sources noted.

The plant is expected to undertake handset orders from LG Electronics and Sony Ericsson for shipments to the Latin American market, said the sources, noting that Arima may ramp up the plant's monthly capacity to 500,000 or one million units, depending on influx of orders.

Previously, Arima was cooperating with EMS firms such as Flextronics International or Elcoteq for handset shipments designated for the Latin American market.

Arima shipped about 13 million handsets in 2008, and the company is expected to ship the same amount of handsets in 2009, the sources estimated.
