Taiwan research lab ITRI enrolled as a director of WiMAX Forum
Taiwan's government-backed Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) was recently enlisted as one of the 17-member directors of the WiMAX Forum, allowing Taiwan to participate in standards setting for the global WiMAX industry, according to ITRI sources.
In its capacity as a director, ITRI will have voting right in the decision-making of WiMAX technological standards and related policies at the WiMAX Forum, the sources noted.
Taiwan has been actively promoting WiMAX technology and applications in recent years, with its shipments of WiMAX CPE products accounting for 90% of the global shipments of US$200 million in 2008, according to an estimate of market sources in Taiwan.
The global shipments of WiMAX CPE products are expected to increase three-fold in the next two years, with Taiwan makers continuing playing a key role in the market place, the sources further forecast.
A total of 39 Taiwan-based companies and organizations, including ITRI, are members of the WiMAX Forum, which currently has a total of 530 members worldwide, according to data available at the WiMAX Forum.
