AT&T Connects Hundreds of Minority Students across the Country to Spark Interest in the Technology Field

AT&T Employee Resource Group HACEMOS Looks to Technology to Motivate Latino High School Students during 11th Annual National High Technology Day

AT&T* today is celebrating the 11th annual National High Technology Day, a nationwide initiative that is hosted by the Hispanic Association of Communications Employees of AT&T (HACEMOS) and aims to inspire minority students to finish high school and pursue rewarding careers in technology fields. National High Technology Day allows low-income and at-risk students to experience a "day in the life" of HACEMOS professionals, tour AT&T facilities and participate in hands-on activities and interactive workshops related to careers in technology.

Students of color are underrepresented in the U.S. technology and engineering fields, according to reports from the Information Technology Association of America (ITAA). Hispanics are the most under-represented group with only 3 percent of Latino college students pursuing a science or engineering degree, according to ITAA.

"High Technology Day allows us to open the eyes of young adults and hopefully inspire them into joining this exciting and rewarding industry," said Richard Macias, director of Corporate Development for AT&T Services, Inc. and national president, HACEMOS. "We are confident that our efforts encouraging Latino students will strengthen our country's future tech workforce."

By offering a valuable opportunity to hear AT&T technology professionals talk about real industry work, National High Technology Day provides a glimpse into the many careers in this field. This year, the initiative will reach more than 700 low-income and at-risk high school students who are participating in 10 cities via video conference. Norma Martinez Lozano, senior vice president-Merger Transition for AT&T Operations, Inc., will serve as keynote speaker for the video conference.

High Technology Day allows students to join hundreds of their fellow classmates across the country via video conference. The event links high schools in the following areas:

Anaheim, Calif. Middletown, New Jersey
Atlanta Norman, Okla.
Dallas San Antonio
Fresno, Calif. San Diego
Mission, Kansas San Ramon Valley, Calif.
