Vmax gets approval to install WiMAX base stations

Taiwan's National Communications Commission (NCC), on February 25, issued a green light for WiMAX licensee Vmax Telecom to begin installation of its WiMAX base stations and related infrastructure.

Vmax has signed contracts with Samsung Electronics and Alvarion for the purchases of about 300 WiMAX base stations from the two companies with an initial budget of NT$1 billion (US$29 million), according to company and market sources.

Market sources estimated that it may require a total input of NT$3 billion by Vmax to build up its WiMAX network in the northern region of Taiwan.

With the approval from the NCC, Vmax may be able to kick off its WiMAX services, initially in Taipei county, by the end of the second quarter of this year, said market sources.

In other news, the NCC said its is also in the process of reviewing applications from Far EasTone Telecommunications (FET) and Vastar Cable TV Systems.
