AT&T Continues to Invest in Texas, Unveils 2009 Expansion Plans
AT&T Plans to Add More Than 130 New Cell Sites, 11 New 3G Markets and Expand AT&T U-verse Service
As people’s lives become increasingly mobile and fast-paced, AT&T* today unveiled its network expansion plans for Texas for the remainder of the year. As part of the expansion, AT&T plans to add more than 130 new cell sites throughout Texas in 2009. Some of these new cell sites will be located across larger metro areas, including Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, El Paso, San Antonio and Sherman-Denison. The majority of the new cell sites, however, will be located in rural areas across the state. AT&T will also launch its third-generation (3G) wireless broadband network in 11 new Texas markets, and expand its AT&T U-verse SM network.
AT&T’s investment in its 3G wireless broadband network – the nation’s fastest, according to recent data compiled by leading independent wireless research firms – is part of AT&T’s ongoing effort to build the broadband networks that will fuel economic growth, and enable its customers to access the content, applications and services that matter most to them. From 2006 to 2008, AT&T’s total capital investment in Texas was more than $6 billion.
In 2009, AT&T plans to launch its 3G network in 11 new Texas markets, including Abilene, Amarillo, Beeville, Eagle Pass, Fredericksburg, Garner State Park, Giddings, Huntsville, Kerrville, Lufkin/Nacogdoches, and San Angelo. AT&T will also continue to expand 3G markets that have already launched, including Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Midland-Odessa, Temple-Killeen and Tyler.
“AT&T’s effort to expand wireless access across Texas contributes to the ongoing economic opportunity in our state,” said Gov. Rick Perry. "AT&T’s continued investment in Texas, even in these difficult economic times, is proof that our state’s low taxes and reasonable regulations are the best way to create jobs and grow a strong economy.”
In 2009, AT&T also plans to implement substantial enhancements to its 3G wireless network in many areas in Texas with the launch of additional wireless spectrum in the 850 MHz band. This new spectrum will add significant capacity to the network to support ever-growing demand for 3G mobile broadband service, and will provide improved in-building 3G wireless coverage for customers.
AT&T’s 3G network opens the door to a new era of advanced mobile services, devices and feature-rich audio and video content, such as AT&T Video ShareSM, a first-of-its-kind technology that allows users to share live video during a wireless call.
These plans build on AT&T’s 2008 wireless investment in which it added more than 100 new cell sites in Texas and completed successful 3G wireless network launches in Boerne, Bolivar Peninsula, Brenham, El Paso, Harlingen, Laredo, Longview, Lubbock, Marble Falls, Midland-Odessa, Temple-Killeen, Tyler, Uvalde, Victoria, Waco and the Rio Grande Valley.
In addition to expanding its wireless network, AT&T will also continue expanding the availability of AT&T U-verseSM services, including AT&T U-verse TV, AT&T U-verse High Speed Internet and AT&T U-verse Voice. AT&T U-verse launched in El Paso in January and Midland-Odessa in March. Throughout 2009, AT&T plans to continue expanding the service in areas where it has already launched, including Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio.
“We continue to make significant investments to deliver dependable high speed wireless access in more places across Texas for consumers and business customers who need to stay connected to work, family and friends,” said Don Cain, president, AT&T Texas. “Our ongoing investments in Texas will help us fulfill this vision while ensuring that our state has access to the advanced wireless broadband services that help drive economic growth.”
AT&T operates more than 200 AT&T-owned retail locations in Texas. AT&T’s products and services are also available at a number of other authorized dealers and national retail locations.
AT&T’s wireless network is based on GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) technologies, the most open and widely used wireless network platform in the world. As a result, only AT&T can offer 3G data roaming in more than 70 countries, as well as voice calling in more than 200 countries, in addition to AT&T’s constant 3G expansion in the U.S. Nearly all devices in AT&T’s current portfolio can be used globally.
