Taiwan market: Fixed-line telecom carriers testing PLC for last-mile hookup
New Century InfoComm Tech (Sparq as trade name) and Taiwan Fixed Network are jointly undertaking a pilot PLC (power line communication) project using power transmission lines as the last-mile connection to provide broadband Internet-access service in Taiwan, according to industry sources.
The project is sponsored by the Ministry of Economic Affairs in an attempt to evaluate the feasibility of using the power transmission networks of state-run Taiwan Power Company (TPC) for PLC, and will come to an end in late September 2009, the sources indicated, adding the PLC download speed is 3Mbps.
Chunghwa Telecom (CHT), which was run by the government and was the only operator of fixed-line telecommunication service in the past, still dominates the fixed telecom networks in Taiwan. The government hopes that TPC's power transmission lines could be used by other operators for last-mile connection, the sources pointed out.
