Garmin-Asus to enter China market by end of 2009; aims to sell one million handsets globally in 2010
Garmin-Asus dual-brand handsets will enter the China market by the end of 2009, targeting retail channel initially before tying up with telecom carriers, according to Benson Lin, vice president and general manager of personal mobile devices business unit at Asustek Computer.
Meanwhile, Garmin-Asus is preparing to ship the Linux-based Nuvifone G60 smartphones to AT&T, which will start marketing the LBS (location-based service)-centric handsets in the North American market this quarter, the Chinese-language Commercial Times quoted Asustek chairman Jonney Shih as indicating.
Garmin will handle the marketing for Garmin-Asus dual-brand handsets in the North American market leveraging its high brand image in the US, Shih noted.
Global shipments of Garmin-Asus LBS smartphones are expected to gain momentum in 2010, reaching one million units, Shih estimated.
With regards to production partners, Garmin-Asus will add Foxconn Electronics as a second partner in addition to current OEM supplier Pegatron Technology, industry sources noted.
