Most Taiwan WiMAX licensees planning to kick off initial commercial services in offshore islands

Most Taiwan-based WiMAX licensees are planning to initially launch their commercial WiMAX services in offshore islands before the operational deadline set at the end of March 2010, according to Taiwan's NCC (National Communications Commission).

Four licensees - Vmax Telecom, Vee Telecom Multimedia, Global Mobile and Far EasTone Telecommunications (FET) - are still building up their WiMAX base stations, NCC noted.

The difficulty of finding suitable locations for the installation of base stations has hampered the build-up process of WiMAX infrastructure by most licensees, said industry sources.

Although Vee Telecom has said that it plans to officially kick off its WiMAX services in Taichung, central Taiwan in December 2009, the company may eventually launch its WiMAX services firstly in offshore island of Kinmen, NCC indicated.

Another licensee First International Telecom (Fitel), which has not yet obtained approval to build up its WiMAX base stations, may also try to secure its operating license by launching its services initially in Matzu islands, NCC said.
