Taiwan market: Samsung and LGE to launch more smartphones to pursue market share

Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics (LGE) both plan to launch more smartphones in the second half 2009 and 2010 in the Taiwan market, aiming to take on HTC, Apple and Nokia, according to the two Korea-based handset vendors.

Samsung unveiled on August 26 its Windows Mobile 6.1-based Omnia II i8000 smartphone in Taiwan, which will become available on store shelves in early September, according to Samsung Taiwan.

Samsung also plans to bring a further two to three smartphones to the Taiwan market before the end of 2009, Samsung Taiwan said, adding that the new smartphones will include Windows Mobile- and Android-based models.

LGE will launch a Windows Mobile 6.5-based smartphone before the end of the year and 5-6 new models in 2010, according to Finsen Chen, vice president of telecom business at LGE Taiwan.

In addition, LGE is also expected to launch an Android-powered smartphone in the Taiwan market in the first quarter of 2010, said market watchers.
