Taiwan-based MVNO Carrefour Telecom to raise capital for tapping overseas markets

Carrefour Telecom, a MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) in Taiwan, will expand its paid-in capital in one year from NT$60 million (US$1.86 million) currently to a planned NT$200 million specifically for tapping markets in China and some Southeast Asian countries, the company said at its anniversary ceremony on November 16.

Carrefour Telecom is a joint venture of Carrefour Taiwan, a venture of France-based retailer Carrefour, and Netherlands-based Effortel Asia BV, who hold respective stakes of 51% and 49%, according to industry sources. Carrefour Telecom procures wholesale lines from Chunghwa Telecom which it then promotes through its retail stores around Taiwan, the sources pointed out.

Carrefour Telecom plans to expand its paid-in capital by NT$60 million to NT$120 million by the end of 2009, with online games operators and other telecom carriers targeted as potential investors, the company indicated. Carrefour Telecom will further increase its capital to a targeted NT$200 million in 2010, the company noted.
