HT mMobile draws new strategic partner; targets China 3G handset market

HT mMobile, a 30%-held affiliate of Taiwan-based Sunplus Technology, has drawn NT$100 million (US$3.09 million) worth of investment from IC distributor Asec International, according to the company. The communication chip designer expects the new strategic partner to help strengthen its channel sales in China.

HT mMobile said it has a 3G handset chip in the design-in stage at customers, with volume shipments set to start in the first quarter of 2010.

Small- to medium-size panel supplier Giantplus Technology has also subscribed to NT$100 million worth of the HT mMobile shares released by parent company Sunplus. HT mMobile said Asec and Giantplus each have gained one seat on its board of directors.

Sunplus was quoted in previous reports that it decided to lower its stake in HT mMobile from 90% previously to 30%, after recognizing investment losses of around NT$317 million (US$9.8 million) from the subsidiary in the first three quarters of 2009. Having reduced its stake in HT mMobile, Sunplus is likely to see losses from HT mMobile decrease to NT$40-50 million in the fourth quarter.
