Network equipment maker AboCom to make handsets for China-based Skyworth Mobile

Taiwan-based network equipment maker AboCom Systems will venture into the handset segment and will initially tie up with China-based Skyworth Mobile Communication for the production of 2.75G and 3G WCDMA models targeting the China market, according to AboCom chairman Eric Ouyang.

Under the cooperation plan, AboCom will roll out 8-11 models for Skyworth in the first quarter of 2010 and the models will gradually expand to over 40 through the whole year of 2010, Ouyang indicated.

AboCom's production of handsets will reach 50,000 units a month in the second quarter of 2010 and the capacity is likely to double starting the second half, Ouyang added, noting that AboCom aims to ship one million handsets in 2010.

AboCom also plans to cooperate with other white-box handset makers in China, offering them PCBA (PCB assembly) and integrated solutions.

AboCom expects its revenues to more than double to NT$4-5 billion (US$123.5-154.3 million) in 2010, buoyed by shipments of handsets and its existing products, including WLAN modules, multimedia access devices and other networking products, Ouyang said.

Shipments of WLAN modules will total 3.6 million units in 2009 and will increase 30-40% to over five million units in 2010, Ouyang projected.
