Taiwan market: FET begins trial WiMAX operations in central Taiwan

Far EasTone Telecommunications (FET) has begun trial operation of its WiMAX network in Taichung, central Taiwan, charging users a monthly fee of NT$599 (US$18.50) with a free WiMAX network card.

FET aims to initially take a 10% share of the household broadband market in Taichung when it officially launches commercial WiMAX services in early 2010, the company said. There are a total of 300,000 households in Taichung City currently.

While purchasing WiMAX network cards from Taiwan-based Accton Wireless Broadband (AWB), FET is also currently conducting interoperability testing on netbooks with built-in WiMAX modules from Acer and Asustek Computer.

FET will also begin to roll out its WiMAX infrastructure in Tainan and Kaohsiung, southern Taiwan in the first quarter of 2010, said the company.
