Taipei Computer Association urges Intel to continue cooperation to boost WiMAX development
JT Wang, in his capacity as president of the Taipei Computer Association (TPC), has asked Intel to maintain its promise to cooperate with the Taiwan government and Taiwan-based enterprises to promote WiMAX development, according to TPC press release on July 15.
Soon after Intel dissolved its WiMAX Program Office in late June, Wang contacted Intel executives asking whether the company had decided to change its WiMAX business policies and/or strategies, TPC indicated. In response, Intel's Navin Shenoy, vice president of Sales and Marketing Group and Asia-Pacific general manager, talked with Wang to clarify the issue, TPC noted.
Intel said that the closure of the office was an adjustment in internal organization, rather than a backing down from WiMAX development, TPC quoted Wang as saying. However, Intel's partners in Taiwan remain concerned whether Intel will continue to support WiMAX and fulfill promises made in an MOU signed with the Taiwan government, Wang pointed out.
Intel's CEO Paul Otellini is expected to make official explanation during a visit to Taiwan no later than October 2010, TPC pointed out.
An Intel spokesperson responded to the TPC's statements saying, "Our position on WiMAX has been widely misunderstood. Allow us to be clear – Intel remains committed to WiMAX, and committed to helping Taiwan companies commercialize around WiMAX."
Intel added that it would not disclose the specifics of private discussions between Intel executives and customers, or government and industry bodies. It also stressed that it has not made any announcements regarding potential visits by Otellini to Taiwan in the near future.
