Inventions in multi-technology products, radio resource management and signalling have won top recognition at Ericsson this year. Three Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) employees have contributed ideas leading to patents in global standards and commercial products, earning them the "Inventor of the Year" award, which Ericsson has presented since 1995.

Muhammad Kazmi and Robert Baldemair, both from Ericsson Research, as well as Jacob Österling, working in Business Unit Networks, are the recipients.

Kazmi and Baldemair worked on inventions that led to patents in LTE. Kazmi’s work relates to radio resource management algorithms and are used in mobile terminals. Baldemair’s main contributions relate to air interface design, addressing a number of key issues including the control signaling in LTE and concepts around carrier aggregation in the upcoming LTE-Advanced system.

Österling is one of the main architects of Ericsson’s RBS 6000, state of the art in the market and commercially one the most important products for Ericsson. It is based on multi-standard units and CPRI and has advantages in capacity, flexibility, size and manufacturing cost.

Ericsson is the number one patent holder in mobile telecom and expects to hold 25 percent of all essential patents for LTE, making it the largest patent holder in the industry. Substantial R&D efforts and creative inventors have ensured this for GSM and WCDMA, and continue into LTE.

Gustav Brismark, Vice President, Patent Strategy and Portfolio, says: "These inventors have not only come up with good ideas, they have followed through until many of them became patents. They have a lot of passion for what they do, which is good for Ericsson and good for the industry."

The efforts of the three winners have resulted in a total 234 patent applications. Ericsson holds 27,000 patents today.
