The Chinese LTE market is opening up…Samsung and LG bet on the ‘2nd LTE home ground.’

Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are aiming squarely at the Chinese LTE market, which is opening up in earnest recently.

China is the worlds’ largest market with more than 1.2 billion mobile communication subscribers. The success or failure in the Chinese market is directly connected to global performance. Samsung Electronics is determined to defend its No. 1 position fighting against the checks of Chinese companies, while LG Electronics will use the Chinese LTE market to become a global major player again.

As they had a dress rehearsal in Korea, the world’s most advanced LTE market, they are aiming to make China their ‘second LTE home market.’

According to the industry on October 31, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics chose the Chinese LTE smartphone market as the main target. If LTE service starts in China, they are planning to take advantage of their LTE technology they acquired at home and abroad to reinforce their attacks in the smartphone market.

“We will capitalize on LTE to reinforce our attacks in the Chinese market,” said Yoon Bu-hyeon, VP of LG Electronics. “We will work with the Chinese subsidiary to tackle the Chinese market on and offline, and penetrate the market from the mid-to long-term perspective, and strengthen our position there.”

“Recently Chinese carriers are trying to introduce LTE,” said Kim Hyeon-jun, VP in charge of the wireless business division in Samsung Electronics. “Next year the LTE network will be built in China, and global LTE service will be diffused.”

Smartphone manufacturers are paying attention to the Chinese market because it is a factor that can change the dynamics of the global LTE smartphone market. The Chinese smartphone market is such a huge market that it accounted for 25% of the global smartphone market in the second half. Not only Korean manufacturers, but also Apple chose China as their strategic market. Apple is trying so hard that it included China in the first release countries for iPhone 5S and 5C.

Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are quickening their preparations as well. Samsung Electronics has already entered into a partnership with China Mobile, and supplied Galaxy Note 2, which supports time division duplex LTE (LTE-TDD), and it is exporting latest terminals like Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3.

LG Electronics exported G2 to the Chinese market through the open market, and is planning to introduce the LTE-TDD terminal before the LTE service starts in earnest in the future. Earlier LG Electronics exported LTE-TDD smartphones to Saudi Arabia.

Chinese manufacturers’ territorialism and the unfriendly attitude in China towards foreign enterprises are said to be problems waiting to be solved. The Chinese smartphone market is dominated by Samsung Electronics, which is ranked No. 1, followed by Chinese manufacturers ranked from No. 2 through No. 5. Even Apple has been pushed to the 6th position. On top of that, the media joined and attacked foreign companies. Recently the Chinese media are churning our articles criticizing Apple and Samsung Electronics to keep foreign companies in check.

“We are quite accustomed to China’s attacking foreign enterprises to defend their own companies,” said an official from a manufacturer. “We are seeking various cooperative relationships with Chinese carriers.
