Sony Ericsson S500 has easy to break keypad?

I have heard of people saying that the new Sony Ericsson S500 has a weak keypad and that it can be easily broken. Well a member from esato, a member from mobile-review and a member from mobile 01 have posted pics of their cracked S500 keypad. What disturbs me is the fact that this happened only after a few days of use. I hope this does not plague all S500s. This makes me think twice about whether to get this phone or not.

UPDATE from Sony Ericsson

  1. Wow! I'm glad you brought this to our attention. I am now scared that the same will happen on the upcoming W580i, since it is basically the same phone logistically. I really want one, but this isn't the first time I've heard about weak SE keypads, so I will definitely think twice!

  2. I was very surprised to see many complaints about this. Hopefully the one I will be getting won't experience this.

  3. This issue happened to me right today. Unbelieveable!
When i saw these pics the first time I thought some idiots might have applied too much pressure to the pad. But no way! I really take care for my electronics-stuff and handled it the normal way. Played the cool preinstalled games and wrote only about 20 SMS this first six days..
In my case the 8 is broken right in front of the "T".

  8. i have written to SE Hungary about the keypad thing. i asked them whether SE produce s500s with new keypads or not. i will write when i get the reply.

  9. So i gave this link to SE Hungary and they said that broken keypad is a result of inefficient usage. Pffh. I don't understand, can not they read?!?! But i don't think that SE won't correct their mistake, they should recall all s500 cellphones and produce new ones with strengthened keypad. Anyway, there are a few s500 so far in Hungary, only in the smallest gsm stores, so that's why SE Hungary replied this because this issue is unfamiliar to them yet. Everybody who has this problem should go to official SE service, they have to know about it in order to make provisions.

    Kriszti

  11. Lol I almost signed a contract on this phone, glad u brought it to my attention.

U should be able to just press the button, even with your nails. A keypad and / or slider should be solid. And u should be able to text alot.

To bad, the phone sounded awesome, but since there's no official reaction from Sony Ericsson Imma go for the N95.

  12. Let me assure you Sony ericsson America is definitely aware of the issue, and working overtime to produce fixes. Your phones should be covered under carrier warranty, and phones should be replaced. This problem was related to materials, not design

  13. as soon as i saw this phone i really wanted it even after i seen the cracked keypad didnt put me off, so i got the phone on the 23rd july its still early days yet iv only sent 12 msgs but have played around on the games and have had no problems whats soever with the keypad or the phone.
i would really recoment this phone and wouldnt be put off with some of the comments here.
i think the keypads that have broken were proberly some kind of faulty batch.

  14. Hi, I am Kat from Singapore. Just want to share something on the keypad issue. I bought my s500 on 9th July this year.I was so happy with the phone because its really cool and the high resolution makes ur pix look really great - as compared to other 2 megapixel phone cameras. But I agree that the keypad is flimsy and my keypad nos 3,6, 4, 7 and 8 have cracked! I went to the service centre only to be told that they are aware of this issue and have ordered new keypads from sony eric. So I have to wait for the shipment to come in and it will be fixed for free. I am really unhappy over this issue as I have no problems with all my previous SE phones. In fact I am still holding on to my w800i as it is still in very good condition although its 2 yrs old. I just hope thay fixed this problem and come up with better strength keypad.

  16. had my s500 about a week now. i love the phone i think it great but the keypad has destroyed it for me. the numbers 3,6 and now just now 2 have all broke right down the middle. feels horrible pressing them.

i dont like changing phones often but i will probaly have to get a replacement i want another s500 cus it a great design and i have never had problems with the SE well apart than that k750 but that was partly my fault.

if they got a stronger keypad would be a great phone.
