HTC reports strong 2007 profits; component shortage to ease by March

In addition to High Tech Computer (HTC) reporting strong profits for 2007, the handset maker will see its component shortages completely ease come March, according to sources with handset components suppliers.

HTC started seeing shortages in power amplifiers (PAs) and Qualcomm 3G baseband chips in the fourth quarter. But the sources disclosed that HTC has now shifted its PA supplier from Anadigics to Avago Technologies, and the PA shortage will ease in March.

Qualcomm is also gearing up its supply for HTC, with the chip shortage easing significantly beginning in January, the sources said. As the handset market has entered the low season, chip supply will run smooth after Chinese New Year in February.

HTC has reported NT$11.38 billion (US$349.64 million) in December sales, down more than 21% sequentially. But fourth-quarter revenues of NT$39.02 billion still be a company record, representing a 32.85% on-year increase.

HTC attributes the record revenues to stronger-than-expected sales of new products. Fourth-quarter net profits also hit a record at over NT$10.03 billion.

ODM business accounted for less than 10% of HTC's fourth-quarter sales, and 90-95% of profits came from non-contract manufacturing business, according to company CFO Hui-ming Cheng.
