Taiwan market: Motorola aims to ship over one million handsets in 2008
Motorola expects its handset sales in Taiwan in 2008 will remain at last year's level of over one million units, according to Bill Chen, general manager of mobile device business at Motorola Taiwan.
However, Motorola aims to boost its profitability by focusing on the mid- and high-end segments, with its market share to top 15% in terms of sales value, Chen stated.
In December 2007, Motorola was ranked the third largest handset vendor in Taiwan with a market share of 9.4% in terms of sales values, trailing Nokia's 34-35% share and Sony Ericsson's 27-28% share, according to the latest data available from retail channels in Taiwan.
In terms of sales volume, Motorola was ranked the fourth largest vendor in December with a 13% market share, the data indicated.
Following the launch its Q9h 3.5G customized smartphone early this week in cooperation with telecom operator Taiwan Mobile, Motorola also began to market four new W-series handsets, the W181, W230, W360 and W362, in Taiwan in cooperation with other carriers.
Motorola is outsourcing the production of the four W-series models to Compal Communications, according to market sources.
