On January 10, 2008, mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson filed to protect the trademark Xperia in relation to “cellular or mobile phones featuring the capacity to function in any number of extra ways beyond just as a phone”.
Mork’s going to guess that this might be the name of Sony Ericsson’s P5i superphone which is rumored to be released in mid-2008.
Even if Xperia isn’t the name of the P5i unit, the detailed filing definitely supports the “super” in superphone. The Sony Ericsson Xperia will:
(paraphrased from the filing) “function as a camera; perform instant messaging; access and communicate with e-mail; access and communicate with the Internet; function as a radio, to record, play, transmit, receive, and/or manage music; record, play, transmit, receive, edit, and/or manage video; create, view, transmit, receive, edit, and/or manage photographs; play electronic games; upload photographs and text onto online journals or web logs; function as a personal digital assistant (PDA); function as walkie-talkies; perform satellite navigation; function as a remote control for computers and run multimedia presentations”.
Geez, Sony Ericsson…maybe you could make it function as a Wiimote or add a Swiss Army knife while you’re at it! Slackers.
Anyway, the filing goes on (and on and on) to relate the Xperia name to such things as “devices that allow images from cellular or mobile phones to be shown on televisions” as well as the “telecommunications services” normally related to mobile phone features and service.
