Yahoo! to Further Solidify Position as Premier Mobile Search Provider
Yahoo! and T-Mobile Agree to Enter into Strategic Partnership To Deliver Yahoo! oneSearch to Eleven European T-Mobile Markets
Agreement Brings Total Number of Yahoo! oneSearch Partners to More
Than 29
BARCELONA, Spain, (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Yahoo! (NASDAQ:YHOO), a leader in developing mobile-first experiences, extended its mobile leadership by announcing that it has agreed to enter into a strategic partnership with T-Mobile International to bring Yahoo!'s industry leading mobile services to millions of consumers in T-Mobile's European footprint. This agreement sets the stage for Yahoo! oneSearch to become the exclusive mobile search service for T-Mobile customers in their 11 European markets beginning at the end of March 2008.
This announcement builds on the steady stream of Yahoo! oneSearch partnerships announced over the course of the last 13 months. In early 2007, Yahoo! reinvented the mobile search experience with the introduction of Yahoo! oneSearch, a search experience specifically designed for the mobile phone that delivers relevant results and instant answers in a user-friendly interface, removing the need for consumers to navigate through a sea of PC Web links. Since introducing Yahoo! oneSearch, Yahoo! has announced partnership agreements with more than 29 leading mobile operators and more than 600 million mobile subscribers around the world.
"When we created Yahoo! oneSearch, we had a belief that mobile search was not the same as PC search. A fundamentally different approach was required, one that included different usage models and results filtering. Most importantly, we believed there was no guarantee that success in PC search would automatically translate into similar success in mobile search, creating a real opportunity for those who innovate," said Marco Boerries, execute vice president, Connected Life, Yahoo!. "Through our commitment to our mobile search philosophy, aggressive product development and worldwide distribution efforts, Yahoo! has emerged as the clear leader in mobile search."
Reinforcing Yahoo!'s mobile momentum, other recent strategic Yahoo! oneSearch partnerships include AT&T in the United States, a global framework agreement with America Movil that covers 16 countries across Latin America, a partnership with Rogers Wireless in Canada, partnerships with 16 operators across the Asia Pacific Region, and an agreement with Telefonica covering portals in 15 countries across Europe and Latin America.
In most of these partnerships, Yahoo! will be the exclusive or preferred mobile search service on the carrier portal, making it easier for consumers to find relevant answers to search queries on their mobile devices, and providing additional revenue opportunities for these partners. Yahoo! and its operator partners are well underway in jointly rolling out Yahoo! oneSearch to consumers around the globe, and expect a number of additional launches to occur over the coming months.
Yahoo! continues to innovate, refine and enhance the mobile search experience. Yahoo! recently added a number of new features to Yahoo! oneSearch, including Flight Tracker, movie reviews from both critics and users and the ability to watch movie trailers on select carriers and handsets. Yahoo! also incorporated content from Yahoo! Answers and Wikipedia, allowing mobile consumers to tap into the Internet's largest knowledge sharing communities and reference sites while on the go, helping consumers find opinions, suggestions and facts quickly on their mobile devices.
For media attending the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Yahoo! will host a press conference and media luncheon today at 2:00PM CET in the Media Center, Hall 2, Level 1 to discuss the Company's mobile announcements and its strategy for enabling the mobile ecosystem. Yahoo! also plans to break more mobile news at the press conference.
