Taiwan handset makers expected to land more smartphone orders from brand vendors

Taiwan-based handset makers are expected to land more orders for smartphones from international brand vendors who are now stepping up efforts to penetrate into the smartphone segment, according to sources in Taiwan's handset industry.

Smartphone orders likely to be released from the leading brand vendors, including Motorola, Sony Ericsson and LG Electronics, will be the focus of competition among Taiwan handset makers, the sources noted.

Previously, the major sources of smartphone orders for Taiwan makers came from international brand IT vendors such as Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Palm, or channel operators such as MWG (formerly O2 Asia Pacific) and i-mate, the sources indicated.

Among Taiwan makers, High Tech Computer (HTC) has landed an ODM order from Sony Ericsson to manufacture the company's Windows Mobile-based Xperia X1 smartphones, which are expected to be available at the end of 2008 or in early 2009, the sources stated.

Motorola reportedly has been in contact with a number of Taiwan makers, including Compal Communications, Chi Mei Communication Systems (CMCS), Arima Communications and Qisda, for possible cooperation in the production of smartphones, said the sources.

LG has just ventured into the smartphone segment recently and the company is likely to team up with Taiwan makers in order to strengthen its competitiveness, pointed out the sources, noting that LG may focus on the joint development of smart devices featuring a QWERTY keyboard since the company is now developing touch-controlled PDA phones by itself.
