Afatech to start volume production of mobile TV chips in 3Q08
Taiwan-based digital TV (DTV) solutions provider Afa Technologies (Afatech) is expected to begin volume production, in the third quarter of this year, of its single-chip mobile TV demodulators supporting DVB-T, DVB-H, T-DMB, DAB/DAB+ and DAB-IP standards, according to market sources.
The availability of the mobile TV chips from Afatech will enable the mobile TV solution vendor to join the ranks of its overseas rivals, including Siano, DiBcom and Newport, the sources noted.
Afatech's mobile TV chips have entered the design-in stage with two or three Taiwan-based handset makers and handset platform developers, including a subsidiary of MediaTek, Chin Fa Technology (translated from Chinese), said the sources.
Chin Fa is engaging in the development of handset platforms, including customized platforms for telecoms clients, and is currently working with Arima Communications to develop related applications for LG Electronics, one of the major clients of MediaTek, the sources indicated.
The cooperation between Afatech and Chin Fa will allow MediaTek to venture into the mobile TV segment, asserted the sources.
