Inventec strikes smartphone deals with Velocity Mobile, say sources
Inventec has struck another deal to manufacture smartphones for Seattle-based Velocity Mobile after terminating smartphone contracts with i-mate in the third quarter of 2007, according to market sources.
The selection of Inventec by Velocity was simply due to Inventec's previous teamwork experience with Velocity's current management term headed by its president David Hayes, a former CTO of i-mate, the sources pointed out.
The team-up between Inventec and Velocity will place the two companies in a position to compete directly with i-mate, the sources speculated.
Velocity unveiled two smartphones, the Velocity 103 and 111, at the recently concluded CTIA Wireless 2008 trade fair in Las Vegas, with the former model expected to begin volume production this quarter, the sources noted. Velocity in fact confirmed at CTIA that it has subcontracted the production of smartphones to Inventec.
Both the Velocity 103 and 111 will be powered by Qualcomm's MSM 7201 chipset and run on Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6.1 platform. The handsets supports HSDPA/HSUPA, Wi-Fi and GPS, according to Velocity data.
