Qisda to begin shipping 3G handsets to Motorola in 3Q08, say sources
Taiwan-based Qisda is expected to begin volume shipments of a 3G handset model to Motorola in the third quarter of this year, according to market sources.
The candy-bar 3G handset will be Motorola's first 3G model manufactured by an ODM provider, noted the sources, indicating that the device will also be Motorola's first 3G handset built using a chipset solution from Qualcomm. Previously, all of Motorola's 3G handsets were based on platforms from Freescale.
Although Motorola has been jointly developing 3G handsets with its long-term supplier Compal Communications, the vendor finalized the 3G orders with Qisda due to the company's previous experience in the development of customized handsets for telecom services providers in Europe, stated the sources.
The 3G handsets from Qisda will be shipped to markets in Europe and Asia initially and then to North America at a later date, the sources indicated.
The 3G model, which will feature rich multimedia functions, reportedly carries a FOB price of below US$100 targeting the entry-level segment, indicated the sources.
