MediaTek and Spreadtrum ready to enter mobile TV solution segment
Eyeing the potential mobile TV market in China, the leading handset chip makers in Taiwan and China are ready to enter the mobile TV solution segment – a move which is likely to quickly bring down the prices of mobile TV chips, according to market sources in Taiwan and China.
Spreadtrum Communications, the largest IC design house in China, unveiled a mobile TV single-chip solution, the SC6600V, the first demodulator/decoder chip supporting the CMMB (China Mobile Multimedia Broadcasting) standard, during the ongoing Asia Future TV 2008 conference being held in Shanghai.
Spreadtrum's SC6600V single-chip solution is designed to enable handset makers and carriers to offer mobile TV in feature phones at reasonable prices, instead of being relegated to expensive smartphones as most mobile TV solutions are currently, the company said in a press release.
Sources at Spreadtrum claimed that the company has completed field testing for the SC6600V and could begin shipping in the second quarter.
In Taiwan, MediaTek has already engaged in the development of mobile TV solutions that will support DVB-H and DVB-T standards, according to markets sources in Taiwan.
MediaTek is expected to bundle the sales of mobile TV solutions with its handset chips so as to expand its presence in the segment, the sources indicated.
The availability of mobile TV solutions from Spreadtrum and MediaTek is expected to push down prices to below US$5 per unit, compared to the prevailing unit prices of about US$6-7, market watchers predict.
