Shipments of mobile navigation on-board devices up 130% worldwide in 2007, says Canalys

In 2006, there were 16.8 million units worldwide of mobile navigation on-board solutions shipped whereas in 2007, there were 39.0 million units, representing more than a 130% on-year growth, according to market research firm Canalys. Over 50% of these devices were shipped in Europe with the US accounting for 31%. The Asia Pacific region account for about 12% of shipments.

In 2007, Asia Pacific saw the second fastest growth in shipments of integrated on-board navigation devices, rising 139% on year to 4.5 million units in 2007, noted Canalys. 40% of shipments went to Korea, followed by Australia with 19%, China with 14%, Taiwan with 8% and Japan with 4%.

In Taiwan in 2007, 0.36 million units of integrated on-board navigation devices were shipped, with Mio Technology having the largest market share of 40% and Garmin coming in second with an 18% share, noted the research firm.

"Personal navigation devices (PNDs) are becoming cheaper, wider, slimmer and more informative," noted Daryl Chiam, analyst at Canalys. Among other developments on the horizon in the industry are connected devices and fixed-rate data plans by operators to cover international data roaming charges, stated Chiam.

Canalys will be hosting a GPS navigation forum in Taipei on May 15 to encourage discussion among major OEM providers of GPS navigation devices. Navigation software providers, hardware manufacturers, map providers and mobile phone operators are expected to attend the event.

"We are coming to Taipei specifically because of the large OEM and ODM community in Taiwan, stated Chiam. "These are the people who are making a majority of the devices and it is very important for them to understand the trends worldwide and what needs to be done to capture the worldwide market."
