Google and OHA urged to set up Android certification testing center in Taiwan

The Department of Industrial Technology (DOIT) under Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) will urge Google and the Open Handset Alliance (OHA) to set up a certification testing center in Taiwan in order to accelerate the development of Android-based handsets, according to Wen-jen Ho, director of Multimedia Technologies Laboratory (MTL) of the government-backed Institute for Information Industry (III).

Ho made the remarks at a seminar on the latest development of smartphones jointly sponsored by the DOIT and Digitimes on June 25.

The OHA, while waiting for High Tech Computer (HTC) to roll out its first Linux smartphone based on the Android platform, has not yet decided on how to carry out the certification process for Android-based mobile devices, Ho noted.

Since the majority of future Android-based handsets and other handheld devices are likely to be produced either in Taiwan or China, the establishment of a certification testing center in Taiwan will help save makers' production costs, while shortening time to market for those devices, Ho stressed.
