Motorola’s Cable PON Portfolio Delivers, Winning Business with Compton Communications

Cable operator selects Motorola for Gigabit PON FTTH build-out to support robust commercial service offerings

SCTE Cable-Tec Expo 2008 – PHILADELPHIA – 25 June 2008 – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) announced today that Ontario-based Compton Communications has selected Motorola’s fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) solution for the launch of its all fiber network and new commercial service offerings. The win marks the first deployment of Motorola’s Gigabit Passive Optical Networking (GPON) technology within the cable industry and within the Canadian market.

The emerging growth of GPON activity across the global cable and telecom markets is the latest indicator of increased demand for higher-capacity broadband infrastructure supporting rich personalized media experiences directed at residential subscribers and advanced commercial services to businesses and enterprises. Compton Communications will use the Motorola AXS1800 Optical Access Platform and ONT1400GT Optical Network Terminal to expand its market opportunity and join the competitive arena of ultra-broadband commercial service delivery.

“Cable operators have long been associated with the delivery of residential services,” said Brendan O’Hara of Compton Communications. “However, with the services capabilities provided by GPON, and specifically Motorola’s proven Cable PON portfolio, we have an opportunity to target commercial service applications where hundreds of megabits or even gigabit throughput is required. It’s a new and important market for us with promising revenue potential.”

“Over the last 18 months, Motorola has been working with cable operators to establish the best way to incorporate FTTH technology into existing cable network applications,” said Dr. George Simmons, corporate vice president and general manager, Access Network Solutions, Motorola, Inc. “Commercial services quickly emerged as a key area of interest among our customers, and GPON is a natural fit as cable companies like Compton Communications look to deliver dedicated high-throughput connectivity in support of business and enterprise networking requirements.”

Motorola continues to innovate in the area of passive optical networking and through its Cable PON portfolio of FTTH solutions designed for cable operators, such as Extended PON, will continue to provide evolutionary and cost-effective approaches to support the cable industries bandwidth expansion activities.

Based on open standards and leveraging a highly flexible design, the Motorola
ONT1400GT addresses the demand for ultra broadband services. It can be configured to seamlessly deliver TDM voice, quality VoIP, multi-port high speed internet access and IPTV via a single fiber optic connection to the home. The ONT1400GT also supports interactive services by integrating upstream signals from Motorola’s widely deployed family of RF headends, RF set-tops and combination RF/IP set-top box solutions.

Optimized for the delivery of video, the Motorola AXS1800 Optical Line Terminal features unparalleled density, scalability and flexibility and provides superior capacity for growth in services such as IPTV, high definition VOD and time-shifted television. Proven to be reliable in tier one service provider networks across the globe, the AXS1800 helps service providers stay ahead of consumer demand for high quality rich personalized communications and entertainment experiences.

Motorola will have a live demonstration of the Motorola AXS1800 Optical Line Terminal and new ONT1400GT optical network terminals at SCTE Cable-Tec Expo®, June 24-27 2008, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, Booth #1251.
