NEC inaugurates WiMAX R&D center in Taiwan
NEC on June 10 announced the official establishment of its WiMAX R&D center in Taiwan that will help carry out interoperability testing (IOT) for WiMAX CPE (customer premise equipment) products made by Taiwan makers and NEC's WiMAX network systems, according to the company.
The center will cooperate Taiwan WiMAX licensee Tatung Telecom and CPE makers, including Alpha Networks, Accton Technology, Accton Wireless Broadband (AWB) and Quanta Microsystems, in the joint development of base stations, CPE products and applications, NEC said.
Initially, the center will accommodate an R&D team of 20 staff with an initial capital of NT$20 million (US$657,900), said NEC.
Tatung Telecom, a WiMAX licensee for the southern region of Taiwan, plans to launch application services such long-distance education, medicare and security surveillance, according to Tatung chairman Lin Wei-shan.
Tatung has purchased a total of 197 WiMAX base stations from NEC with part of the planned installation now being implemented.
