WPG details handset design trends in China
As the largest IC distributor for MediaTek's handset chips in China, WPG Holdings' marketing vice president Chuen-Jie Lin believes that multimedia-rich handsets will be the mainstream through 2009, and growing demand for embedded USB ports, mobile TV and dual-power supplies will become key design trends in the future.
Multimedia handsets will continue as mainstream through 2009, with dual-mode/SIM card and handwriting recognition support as key development trends in this period, Lin said. He added in saying that sales for dual-mode/SIM card handsets likely to be good in 2008 with consistently solid demand.
Currently dual-mode/SIM card handsets in China mainly support GSM+PHS or TD-SCDMA+GSM standards. Since PHS-compliant handsets are only available for metropolitan areas and do not support roaming services, development of GSM+PHS dual mode/SIM card handsets will be a key development trend, Lin said. He added in saying that more observation about TD-SCDMA handsets is required as growth opportunities are still unclear.
Amid the launch of Apple's iPhone whose multi-touch functions raised eyebrows among consumers, Lin said iPhone-like handsets are hot sellers in China, with multi-touch now being a key function that handset vendors look for. Most future handsets will support similar functions, he projected.
