China Mobile may offer Android handsets through cooperation with HTC, say Taiwan makers

China Mobile Communications (China Mobile), the largest operator of mobile communication services in China, may take the initiative to offer Android handsets in the China market through outsourced production by Taiwan-based High Tech Computer (HTC), the maker of the T-Mobile G1, according to industry sources in Taiwan.

China Mobile, among mobile telecom carriers in China, is the only one to join the Open Handset Alliance (OHA), the sources pointed out. In addition, China Mobile and Google, Marvell, China-based software developer Borqs International formed a technology alliance in September 2007 to promote a Linux-based open mobile system (OMS), integrating mobile applications specifically for the China market, the sources indicated.

China Mobile originally planned to offer an Android-platform OMS handset in China by the end of 2008, with OMS applications to be developed by Borqs, the sources indicated. But because the development of OMS applications has lagged behind schedule, China Mobile is likely to postpone launching the handset until the second quarter of 2009, the sources noted.

As an alternative, China Mobile may seek cooperation from HTC to offer an Android handset first by the end of 2008 before offering OMS handsets, with the Android handset possibly to support China's TD-SCDMA 3G standard, the sources pointed out.

HTC plans to set up a subsidiary in China, and one of the motivations is to promote cooperation with China Mobile, the sources indicated.
