Green network brings high-speed mobile broadband to more Serbian customers
Telekom Srbija chooses energy efficient solution from Nokia Siemens Networks for further extension of its 2G and 3G networks
The leading Serbian mobile operator is expanding its high-speed mobile broadband service by extending and upgrading its 2G and 3G networks, strengthening its competitive position. Telekom Srbija’s mobile arm, mt:s, has chosen the industry’s most energy efficient mobile network from Nokia Siemens Networks for the project.
"Over the years, Nokia Siemens Networks has proved to be a strong, competent and most reliable partner for us,” said Vladimir Lučić, Telekom Srbija CMO. “They understand our needs and provide us with top-of-the-class solutions, like the green network solution featuring unmatched multi-radio base stations with low power consumption.”
The network extension will increase the mt:s network capacity and the availability of quality multimedia and data services across the nation, as customers in smaller Serbian towns in addition to residents of major cities will be able to enjoy mobile broadband.
“Energy efficient solutions are vital for operators as energy costs are the third most significant cost category for an average mobile operator,” said Miodrag Radojevic, who is in charge of business with the Telekom Serbija group across the region. “Of that energy almost 90% is used in the base stations, so an efficient solution isn’t just better for the environment, but better for business.”
The project, to be completed by the end of the year, covers 2G and 3G radio and core equipment, a broad range of services including network implementation, integration and care as well as an upgrade of the network and service management solution to reduce dropped calls. Nokia Siemens Networks will extend the existing prepaid charging platform to allow mt:s to offer attractive loyalty programs to its subscribers.
Nokia Siemens Networks radio access network is based on the advanced Flexi base station, the industry’s smallest and most efficient multi-technology node, providing significant operational savings and reducing power consumption by up to 70 percent, as compared to traditional equipment. The network, with High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) technology, offers faster and easier downloads and greater capacity to mt:s subscribers.
The high-capacity packet core solution will let mt:s support a large number of mobile consumers, even if they are heavy users of data services. It can also be upgraded to prepare for the “flat architecture” that will be part of future Long Term Evolution mobile networks.
